Further information

Tommaso Traetta made his debut as a choir director (maestro di coro) at the Ospedale di S. Giovanni e Paolo, also known as «Ospedaletto,» on August 15, 1766, with the oratorio «Rex Salomon». The institution was one of the four Venetian residential and educational institutions for girls, known for their musical performances, and mainly composed of girls from poor and underprivileged backgrounds. Traetta, who already had a remarkable international career, was tasked with reviving the struggling institution facing organizational and economic challenges. He succeeded in doing so sustainably, as «Rex Salomon» was a success and was performed several times over the next eleven years. In 1768 Traetta moved to St. Petersburg to replace Baldassare Galuppi at the court of Czarina Catherine II, and did not return until 1775. Antonio Sacchini represented Traetta at Ospedaletto during his absence until 1773, when he went to London. Pasquale Anfossi took over after him and made some changes to the score of «King Solomon». The musical source for our oratorio refers to a 1776 performance, where the role of Abiathar, originally written for an alto voice, was adapted to the agile and flexible voice of the soprano Lucia Bianchi. Under the direction of Christophe Rousset, an exquisite ensemble of young singers from the current early music scene, along with the Tyrolean vocal ensemble NovoCanto and the Theresia Orchestra, celebrated in Mattheson's «Boris Goudenow,» will be featured.
